Introduction / History

Mayoyao is both the people group name and the name of one of three municipalities where they live. The traditional homeland is in the mountains of central Luzon Island. Access to the area is geographically difficult with steep, rugged trails and dirt roads. There are now an estimated 40 percent believers who traditionally used to worship many spirits. Students pursuing high school must seek accommodations outside the Mayoyao area.

The area is well known for ancient, stone-walled, mountain rice fields, but they don't produce enough for local consumption. Life changed for the Mayoyao people in 2004. That year, the New Testament was finally published in their own language! Pastors throughout the area immediately started using the new Scriptures in their services, and people started reading them in their homes. But something was missing. Where were the prophecies that spoke of Messiah? The historical books that described the Law and its requirements? What of the poetry of praise and expressions of wisdom? Church leaders grew desperate, and formed a committee. They started to translate the Old Testament on their own!
